The Arms of Odysseus: Bronze Weapons, the Trojan War, and What Hollywood Gets Wrong


There is a suit of armour in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion that has ruined a great many films for me.

It was pulled out of a chamber tomb at Dendra in the Argolid in 1960: fifteen sheets of beaten bronze, laced together with leather thongs, encasing a man from throat to knee in a rigid tubular shell, with separate shoulder guards, a high neck collar, arm protection and greaves. It weighs somewhere between twenty-three and twenty-nine kilograms. It looks less like a Greek hero and more like something dragged out of a diving bell. It is, by a comfortable margin, the most complete piece of Late Bronze Age body armour ever recovered from the Aegean, and it dates to somewhere around 1400 BC — Late Helladic IIIA, with related pauldron and plate finds from Dendra, Thebes and Phaistos pushing the type’s range back towards 1450 and forward towards 1350.

You have never seen it in a cinema. You almost certainly never will.

I am writing this in the summer of 2026, with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in cinemas and doing extremely well, and with a months-long internet argument about its armour still smouldering. That argument is worth having, but most of it has been conducted at the level of “does this look cool” rather than “does this match what comes out of the ground.” I handle Bronze Age weapons for a living. This article is my attempt to set out, as precisely as the evidence allows, what a man like Odysseus would actually have carried to Troy — what Homer says he carried, what archaeology says a man of his period and rank could have owned, where those two things agree, where they violently disagree, and where the film industry has quietly invented a third version that resembles neither.

I will not be gentle about the last part. But I want to be fair about why the films are wrong, because the reasons are more interesting than the errors.


Three Trojan Wars, Not One

The single most useful thing I can give you is this: there are three Trojan Wars, and almost every argument about “accuracy” is really an argument about which one you mean.

The first is the archaeological war. Somewhere around 1180 BC, the settlement at Hisarlık in north-western Anatolia — the layer archaeologists label Troy VIIa — burned. The destruction deposit contains spearpoints, arrowheads and a cache of sling stones, which is not what you find in a domestic accident. That is the material war, and it left almost no words behind.

The second is Homer’s war. The Iliad was composed in something close to its surviving form around 750–700 BC, roughly four or five centuries after Troy VIIa burned, by a poet or poets working in a hexameter oral tradition whose linguistic layers reach back demonstrably earlier — M. L. West argued that Greek heroic verse was already being cast in hexameters by the fourteenth century BC. Homer’s world is therefore a composite: genuine Bronze Age fossils, preserved in formula, embedded in a matrix of eighth-century assumptions about how war works, how kings behave, and what metal things are made of.

The third is the cinematic war, and it is essentially a Classical Greek costume drama wearing a Bronze Age nameplate. Crested Corinthian helmets, round hoplite shields with arm-bands, red cloaks, disciplined lines of men in muscle cuirasses. This iconography is roughly seven hundred years too late for Troy VIIa, and it is not Homer’s either. It comes from Attic vase painting, from Victorian history painting, and above all from the Italian peplum films of the 1950s and 60s, which standardised a Greco-Roman visual shorthand on very small budgets and bequeathed it to everyone since.

Every complaint I am about to make about Hollywood is a complaint about the third war being sold as the first.


When Did It Happen, and Was There Anyone There?

The honest answer on historicity is: something happened at Troy, we have a suspiciously good set of coincidences, and we do not have proof.

Here is what we do have. Hittite cuneiform archives from Hattuša name a north-western Anatolian vassal kingdom called Wilusa, which corresponds phonetically to Greek Wilios / Ilios — Homer’s own name for the city. The same archives refer, across roughly twenty-six tablets spanning about 1400 to 1200 BC, to a western power called Ahhiyawa, which most specialists identify with the Mycenaean Greek world (Homer’s Achaioi). Around 1280 BC the Hittite king Muwatalli II concluded a treaty with a ruler of Wilusa named Alaksandu — a name built from transparently Greek roots, and uncomfortably close to Alexandros, the Iliad‘s alternative name for Paris. Later texts record a Wilusan king, Walmu, deposed around the 1240s–1220s, with the Hittites scrambling to reinstall him. The Tawagalawa letter shows an Ahhiyawan-backed adventurer named Piyamaradu causing trouble in the same region.

So: a Greek-speaking power meddling in a Hittite client state in north-western Anatolia, repeatedly, over generations, at exactly the right place. And then a burnt city, at exactly the right time.

What we do not have is a tablet saying an Ahhiyawan king attacked Wilusa and burned it. The chronology is also awkward — the Alaksandu treaty is a good sixty to a hundred years before the fire. A ten-year siege by a pan-Hellenic coalition of thousands of ships is almost certainly epic inflation of something smaller and nastier: a raid, or a series of raids, in a century when raiding was becoming the dominant mode of Mediterranean politics.

That century is the point. Troy VIIa did not burn in isolation. It burned during the Late Bronze Age collapse, and everything about the weapons in this article makes more sense once you see the war as a symptom of that collapse rather than a prelude to it.


The Collapse Is the Real Story

Between roughly 1200 and 1150 BC the eastern Mediterranean system came apart. Hattuša was abandoned. Ugarit was destroyed and never reoccupied. The Mycenaean palaces at Pylos, Mycenae, Tiryns and Thebes were burned or abandoned; Linear B administration vanished, and with it literacy in Greece for four hundred years. Egyptian records under Merneptah and Ramesses III describe coalitions of seaborne raiders — the “Sea Peoples” — attacking the Delta. The Medinet Habu reliefs show them: round shields, horned and feathered headgear, long straight swords, ox-carts full of families. This was migration and predation at once.

The mechanism that matters for a weapons collection is tin.

Bronze is roughly nine parts copper to one part tin, and tin is vanishingly rare — about two parts per million in the earth’s crust, against seventy for copper. The Aegean has effectively none. Recent isotopic work published in Antiquity in 2025 traced tin ingots from around 1300 BC shipwrecks off the coast of Israel back to alluvial cassiterite deposits in Cornwall and Devon — a supply chain running four thousand kilometres, through intermediaries, sustained for centuries, moving tonnage annually.

Think about what that means. The sword on Agamemnon’s hip depended on a farming community in south-west Britain that had never heard of him, and on a dozen brokered handovers in between. A bronze economy is a globalised economy by necessity. When the palace bureaucracies that financed and organised those exchanges failed, the metal supply failed with them.

This is the deepest reason iron eventually won. Not because iron was better — early bloomery iron was, for a long time, worse than good bronze — but because iron ore is everywhere and tin is nowhere. Iron is the metal of a world that can no longer run a four-thousand-kilometre supply chain.

Robert Drews, in The End of the Bronze Age (1993), argued that the collapse was driven specifically by a military revolution: massed infantry with javelins and new cut-and-thrust swords rendering the chariot-based palace armies obsolete. That thesis has taken heavy fire — most scholars now favour a multi-causal picture involving drought, systems collapse, migration, earthquake sequences and internal revolt — but Drews put his finger on something real in the metalwork, and I will come back to it.


What Homer Actually Gives Odysseus

Now to the man himself. If you strip away four hundred films and two hundred novels and read the text, Odysseus’s kit is surprisingly specific — and in one particular it is the best-vindicated passage in all of Homer.

The boar’s tusk helmet

In Iliad Book 10, the night-raid episode known as the Doloneia, Odysseus and Diomedes arm themselves for a covert operation. Neither has his own gear to hand. Meriones the Cretan hands Odysseus a bow, a quiver, a sword, and a helmet.

Homer then describes that helmet in unusual technical detail (10.260–265): a leather cap, stiffened inside by many tightly stretched thongs, with a felt layer set in the middle, and the outside covered in rows of white boar’s tusks, the tusks in each row running in alternate directions. He then gives its provenance — his grandfather Autolycus stole it from Amyntor at Eleon; it passed to Amphidamas of Cythera, then as a guest-gift to Molus, then to Molus’s son Meriones, and now onto the head of Odysseus.

Every element of that description is archaeologically correct, and none of it was true in Homer’s own lifetime.

Boar’s tusk helmets are a genuinely Mycenaean object. Split tusk plates, drilled for stitching to a leather or felt cap, turn up in Mycenaean tombs — including at Dendra, alongside the bronze panoply. They are depicted on frescoes from Akrotiri on Thera in the sixteenth century BC and still on the palace wall paintings at Pylos in the late thirteenth. They appear on ivory inlays, on seals, on metal vessels. A single helmet consumed the tusks of dozens of boars, which made it a status object as much as a defence — it advertised that its owner, or his ancestors, had hunted a great deal and survived.

And the type was long obsolete by 750 BC. Homer had no way of knowing what one looked like except through the tradition itself. That the description survived, accurate, across the collapse and four centuries of illiteracy, is one of the strongest arguments that the epic preserves real Bronze Age memory. The genealogy Homer attaches to it — four owners, three generations, moving by theft and guest-gift — is not decoration. It is a statement that this object is an antique even within the story.

Odysseus goes on a night raid wearing a museum piece. That is the joke, and Homer’s audience got it.

The spear, not the sword

The spear is the weapon of the Iliad. Sword-strokes are comparatively rare; the sword is a sidearm, drawn when the spear is thrown, broken, or stuck in someone. This matches Mycenaean archaeology, where the spear remains the principal infantry weapon through to the collapse and the sword plays a supporting role.

Late Helladic spearheads are socketed, cast in bivalve moulds, and often very large. The Sancta Clara Collection holds several pieces from the wider Late Bronze Age European and Aegean tradition that illustrate the type well. Lot 97137769 is a 29.5 cm socketed head of 1500–1100 BC date with a pronounced narrow midrib and — the detail I care about — a casting seam running perpendicular to the midrib at the neck of the socket, the unmistakable signature of a two-piece mould. Lot 98465245, of comparable date, carries a wide central ridge and crystalline growth in the patina. Lot 97806108, at 150.9 mm, shows the smaller end of the range, the sort of head that arms a javelin rather than a thrusting spear.

The earlier Aegean tradition is represented by a different hafting solution entirely. Lot 1516, a Cycladic copper spear point of around 2700–2300 BC and probably from Amorgos, has a broad blade and a rat-tail tang, with the mounting mark of its wooden shaft still visible and elongated attachment holes for binding. Lot 83118347, a Cypriot or Cycladic head of about 2400–2100 BC at 268 mm, carries the same long tang terminating in a small hooked rat-tail. These are a thousand years too early for Troy, but they show the ancestry: the socket had to be invented, and before it was, the metal was tied on.

The single piece in the collection that speaks most directly to the Aegean martial idiom is Lot 98946837, an early Greek bronze spearhead of 258 mm with a triangular blade, a wide flat midrib, and squared shoulders that splay into short lateral wings. The neck is rectangular in section and terminates in a splayed stop-ridge; the shoulder flanges are decorated with incised stripes. Those stripes are skeuomorphic — they are cast metal imitating the appearance of a binding that, on this design, no longer does any work. That is a craftsman quoting an older technology for the sake of prestige, and it is precisely the sort of conservatism that lets an epic tradition preserve obsolete objects for four hundred years.

Homer’s spears are also, notably, very long — longer than anything in use in his own day. Another fossil.

The sword: xiphos arguroelon

Homer’s standard sword epithet is arguroelon, “silver-studded” or “silver-riveted,” used of swords belonging to Agamemnon, Achilles, Paris, Ajax, Hector and others, and repeated in the Odyssey. It refers to rivets or studs securing organic hilt plates to the tang — and rivets of precious metal are attested on Mycenaean swords. It is a real detail, formulaically preserved.

The Aegean sword sequence, in the typology Sandars established, runs from the enormous Type A rapiers of the Mycenae shaft graves — blades around ninety centimetres, magnificent and structurally fragile, designed purely to thrust — through Type B with its tanged construction, and on through C, D, E and G towards shorter, broader, more robust forms. By Late Helladic IIIB the game changes: the Naue II type arrives.

The Naue II is the most consequential sword in European prehistory. It originates in northern Italy and the Urnfield zone, and it is a fully integrated flange-hilted design — the tang widens into flanges that grip riveted hilt plates, making the whole weapon a single structural unit rather than a blade bolted to a handle. Blades run 50–85 cm, most commonly 60–70. It is optimised for cut-and-thrust with a bias towards the cut, which is a fundamental break from the pure-thrust logic of the old Aegean rapier.

It spreads with astonishing speed. Earliest Aegean examples come from Mycenae and Enkomi; by around 1200 BC Naue II swords are turning up at Ugarit, decades before that city’s destruction. Roughly thirty-eight bronze examples are known from the Greek world including Cyprus, against over a hundred from Italy. In post-palatial Late Helladic IIIC it becomes the standard Aegean sword. It then survives the collapse by simply changing material — the same form continues in iron into the Early Iron Age, which almost no other bronze design managed.

If a historical Odysseus fought at Troy around 1180 BC, the Naue II is the weapon he most plausibly carried. And the Naue II arrives in the Aegean as a foreign import, associated in the scholarship with Italian and Balkan mercenaries, with mobile warrior bands, and — speculatively but persistently — with the Sea Peoples themselves.

Within the collection, the shift in blade philosophy across the second millennium is visible in a run of pieces. Lot 83351659, a rapier-form dagger of 1400–1000 BC at 220 mm, sits at the thrusting end. Lot 902, a Near Eastern rapier-type short sword of 480 mm, and Lot 901, its 344 mm relative associated with the reign of Marduk-nadin-ahhe around 1090 BC, show the same idiom in a Mesopotamian register at almost exactly the collapse horizon. Against these, Lot 84122607 (1200–1000 BC, 320 mm), Lot 83346847 (1400–1000 BC, 370 mm) and Lot 83845543 are broader, shorter, sturdier blades — weapons meant to survive being used badly. Lot 778, a Mycenaean short sword of 390 mm from the 1700–1200 BC range, and Lot 82723193, a Mycenaean dagger of 217 mm from 1600–1200 BC, are the two pieces in the collection that sit closest to the Trojan horizon geographically and chronologically.

I should be honest about a limitation here: securely provenanced Late Helladic Aegean weapons are genuinely scarce on the open market, and much of what is offered as “Mycenaean” is attributed on typological grounds alone. The Near Eastern and central European material in this collection is far better anchored. I would rather say that plainly than imply an Aegean depth the cabinet does not have.

The shield

Homer gives his heroes two incompatible kinds of shield, and both are real — just not at the same time.

Ajax carries a sakos “like a tower” (7.219–223): seven layers of ox-hide from seven well-fed bulls, faced with an eighth layer of bronze, made by Tychius the leather-worker. It is large enough to shelter his half-brother Teucer, who shoots from behind it. Hector’s shield beats against his neck and ankles as he runs. Periphetes trips over his own shield rim and dies for it.

Those are body shields, and they are Mycenaean. Both the rectangular tower shield and the waisted figure-of-eight shield appear in the Shaft Grave art at Mycenae, on the Siege Rhyton, on inlaid dagger blades, on frescoes down to the thirteenth century. They were hide over a wicker or wooden frame, carried on a shoulder strap, covering a man from chin to ankle. No complete example survives — organic materials do not last — so we have only the images.

But most shields in the Iliad are round, and round shields are a Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age development. The tower shield was already going out of favour around 1500 BC on grounds of weight and restricted movement. By the thirteenth century, Mycenaean equipment had lightened generally: the Warrior Vase of around 1200 BC shows men with small round shields and light body armour, which is a different army from the one on the Shaft Grave rings.

So Homer has both, side by side, because his tradition has both, side by side. The tower shield is a Bronze Age fossil surviving in formula and attached to a specific archaic hero. The round shields are the norm his audience knew.

Here is the part that matters for the films: Homer’s round shield is not the Classical hoplon. The hoplite shield with its bronze face, arm-band (porpax) and hand-grip (antilabe) is a seventh-century invention that only works within a phalanx. Putting it in the hands of men at Troy is an error of five hundred years minimum, and it drags the whole choreography of the fighting with it.

Body armour

Homer’s warriors wear a thorex, and the bronze glare of massed armour is one of his favourite images — helmets, corslets and shields lighting up the sky as an army arms.

The archaeology gives us Dendra and not much else: a gauntlet from a chamber tomb near Mycenae, plate fragments from a tholos near Nichoria, bronze bands from Mycenae and Phaistos, scale armour from Mycenae and from Troy itself. Scale is the older and more widespread eastern solution; the Dendra-type articulated plate shell appears to be an Aegean speciality, and a short-lived one — after around 1300 BC, as bronze circulation contracted, large bronze objects including armour largely disappear from the record.

For decades Dendra was written off as ceremonial: too heavy, too restrictive, obviously a burial display. That view took a serious blow in 2024. A study published in PLOS ONE had thirteen volunteers from the Hellenic Armed Forces wear accurate replicas through an eleven-hour simulated Late Bronze Age combat protocol — a protocol the researchers built by systematically analysing the fighting described in the Iliad, then modelling thermal load numerically across different conditions. The men completed it. The armour works.

That result cuts both ways, and I want to be careful. It demonstrates that the panoply was compatible with extended combat; it does not prove that Aegean warfare generally looked like men in plate. Dendra remains one suit from one elite tomb. But the ceremonial dismissal is no longer tenable, and the study’s authors argue reasonably that armour technology was part of why Mycenaean power projected as far as it did.

The bow he did not bring

Now the correction I most want to make, because it is the one popular culture gets wrong most consistently.

Odysseus did not take his famous bow to Troy.

Homer says so directly, at Odyssey 21.38–41. The great bow was a guest-gift from Iphitus, son of Eurytus, exchanged in Messene when both men were young — Odysseus there to recover three hundred stolen sheep, Iphitus hunting twelve missing mares. Odysseus gave a sharp sword and a spear in return. Iphitus was then murdered by Heracles in violation of every law of hospitality, and the two never met again. The bow, Homer says explicitly, Odysseus would never take with him on the black ships; he left it at home as a memorial of a friend, and used it only in his own country. It sat in the storeroom at Ithaca for twenty years, unstrung, alongside gold and bronze and hammered iron.

That is not an incidental detail. It is the load-bearing device of the Odyssey‘s ending. The bow is the one thing in the house that only Odysseus can use, precisely because it never went to war. When he strings it in Book 21 and starts shooting in Book 22 — killing Antinous first, then working through the suitors until the arrows run out, and only then arming for hand-to-hand — the weapon’s twenty-year absence is what makes the scene mean anything.

Meriones lends him a bow for one night raid in Iliad 10. That is the whole of Odysseus’s archery at Troy. The archers of the Iliad are Pandarus, Teucer and Paris — and Homer’s attitude to the bow is ambivalent at best. Diomedes calls Paris a bowman and a hair-styling seducer in the same breath. Teucer shoots from behind his brother’s shield, which is effective and not entirely respectable. The bow is a weapon that works and confers no honour.

This is, incidentally, an eighth-century Greek aristocratic attitude more than a Bronze Age one. The Late Bronze Age Near East ran on archery. The composite bow, probably steppe in origin, was the standard armament of the Egyptian and Hittite chariot corps and a decisive technology of the age. Mycenae’s shaft graves produced large numbers of flint and obsidian arrowheads, and the material is not local — it was imported. Lot 720 in this collection, a bronze archer’s ring, is a reminder that thumb-draw and release aids were part of the serious archer’s equipment across the Near East long before Homer’s contemporaries decided bows were slightly disreputable.

The chariot he did not have

Homer’s chariots are battlefield taxis. Heroes ride to the fighting, dismount, fight on foot, and are collected afterwards. There are only four occasions in the Iliad where an individual fights from a chariot at all, and in two of those he is throwing javelins rather than thrusting.

That is emphatically not how the great Bronze Age powers used chariots. Egypt, Hatti, Mitanni and by every indication Mycenaean Greece used them as mobile shooting and thrusting platforms, in massed formations, at speed. The Linear B tablets record chariot inventories and wheel stocks with bureaucratic precision. Homer preserves the vehicle and forgets the doctrine — or rather, he describes a practice that maps closely onto how his own eighth- and seventh-century contemporaries used horses, where a warrior rides to the fight and a squire holds the animal.

The counter-argument, which Hans van Wees has pressed effectively, is that Homer is not misremembering Mycenaean warfare at all; he is accurately describing Archaic warfare and simply substituting chariots for horses because chariots are what the tradition says heroes have. Littauer and Crouwel, the two most productive scholars of ancient vehicles, have separately argued that Mycenaean chariotry may genuinely have included a taxi function. Nestor’s famous instruction to keep formation and thrust with the spear looks like a survival of real doctrine poking through.

I lean towards van Wees, but I hold it loosely. What is not in doubt: Odysseus does not appear to own a chariot. He is a man from a small, poor, rocky island, and Homer is quietly consistent about this. Ithaca is not horse country. It is one of the sharpest characterisations in the poem, and I have never seen a film register it.


The Other Side: What the Trojans Would Have Carried

Homer gives the Trojans Greek gear, Greek gods, Greek customs and Greek names. This is a literary choice, not a report. It makes Hector legible as a tragic mirror of Achilles, which is the point of the poem. It is not evidence.

Archaeologically, Wilusa was a Hittite vassal on the north-western Anatolian coast, plugged into two systems at once: the Anatolian interior and the Aegean maritime world. Its material culture should reflect both, and does.

From the Anatolian side, the expected kit is the sickle sword — the khopesh family, a forward-curving hacking blade descended from the battle axe, roughly 50–60 cm, developed in western Asia and spread through Egypt and the Levant. Its edge is on the outer curve; the inner curve of many surviving examples is deliberately blunt, which tells you it was designed to hook and pull as much as to cut. Against a shield wall that is exactly the right tool: catch a rim, drag it offline, and let the man behind you put a spear through the gap. The Hittites used related forms, whether inherited from Mesopotamia or adopted from Egypt. Add scale armour of bronze plates on leather — the eastern solution, older and more practical than Aegean plate, and attested at Troy itself. Add the composite bow, and chariotry used properly.

From the Aegean side, there was traffic in both directions. A Mycenaean Type B sword of Late Helladic II date was found at Hattuša in 1991, bearing an Akkadian inscription dedicating it to a god — a Hittite king offering a captured or gifted Aegean blade in a temple. Aegean-type swords in Anatolian contexts are rare but real. Bronze scale armour has come out of both Mycenae and Troy.

For the projectile side of the equation, the collection’s Levantine and Egyptian arrowhead material is directly relevant to the wider theatre even where it cannot be tied to Troy. Lot 128 and Lot 2596 are bilobate socketed heads of the Canaanite type that dominates Levantine assemblages through the second millennium. Lot 11491, an Egyptian bilobate leaf-shaped head with a knob dated 1550–1292 BC, and Lot 1828, an Egyptian head attributed to the Eighteenth Dynasty from Thebes, sit squarely in the New Kingdom military horizon that fought the Sea Peoples a few generations later. Lot 11496, a Greek bilobate barbed head with knob dated 1200–700 BC, spans the collapse itself.

The collection also contains Lot 946, sold as a “Troian” archaic copper arrowhead of 108 mm. I include it here with the caveat it deserves: that attribution rests on the seller’s word and a broad date range, and I have no independent means of confirming a Trojan findspot. It is a good, early, hammered copper piece. Whether it ever saw Hisarlık is unknowable, and I will not pretend otherwise.

One further point of honesty: we have no Trojan text. Not one. Everything above is inference from Hittite records about Wilusa, from regional typology, and from what was found in the destruction layer. If someone tells you confidently what a Trojan warrior looked like, they are extrapolating. So am I. The difference is that I am telling you.


The Wider War: Sea Peoples and the New Weapons

The equipment that appears on the Medinet Habu reliefs of Ramesses III is worth studying precisely because it is the kit of the people who broke the system.

Round shields. Horned and feathered headgear. Long straight cut-and-thrust swords. Javelins. Ships. No chariots to speak of. This is light, mobile, cheap infantry equipment — the armament of men who do not have a palace bureaucracy behind them and do not need one.

Drews’s argument was that this was the decisive change: that massed infantry with javelins and Naue II swords could destroy chariot armies, and that once that became clear, the palace states which had staked everything on expensive chariotry were finished. The strongest objection is that it inverts cause and effect — infantry may have proliferated because the palaces were already failing and could no longer field chariots, not the other way round. Drought data, seismic sequences, and the general fragility of interdependent systems all now carry more weight in the literature than they did in 1993.

But the metalwork is real, and its timing is uncomfortable. The Naue II reaches Ugarit shortly before Ugarit ceases to exist. New weapon types of central European, Italian and Balkan origin appear across the Aegean in the late thirteenth and twelfth centuries. Whatever else was happening, something in the military technology genuinely changed, and it changed towards the cheap, the robust, and the individually decisive.

The Urnfield material in the collection is the western end of that same current — Lot 97524689, a socketed axe from the Podkonice hoard; Lot 97814529, a large decorated Urnfield axe head at 11.2 cm; Lot 792, a flanged winged axe of around 1100 BC. These are the tools and weapons of the culture zone that produced the Naue II and exported it to a Mediterranean that was about to fall apart.

And Lot 90939651 deserves a note. It was sold as a socketed spearhead from Ugarit, 1200–700 BC, and the catalogue description confusingly calls it Luristan in the same breath. The folded seam runs the full length of the socket, widening towards the base, and there are three rivet holes at the socket end. The typological comparison the seller cites — Schaeffer’s poche aux bronzes material from Ugarit — is apt for the form. Whether this particular head came from Ugarit, I cannot verify. The internal contradiction in the description is itself instructive about how this market attributes things.


Now, Brutally: What the Films Get Wrong

Troy (2004)

The 2004 film is a good-looking piece of work and I do not object to its dramaturgy. Compressing ten years into a fortnight is a defensible screenwriting decision. Removing the gods is a legitimate interpretive choice, even if it guts the theology that makes the Iliad what it is. Killing Menelaus and Agamemnon is simply a different story, and stories are allowed to be different.

The material culture is another matter.

The armour and helmets are Classical, not Bronze Age. Crested helmets of the kind shown were not in use in the twelfth century BC. The muscle cuirass is later still. The one helmet we know for certain that a Homeric hero wore — the boar’s tusk helmet, described in more technical detail than any other object in the Iliad, and archaeologically confirmed — does not appear in the film at all. It would have looked extraordinary on screen. They left it out.

The shields are hoplite shields. Large, round, faced in bronze, held on the arm. That is a seventh-century object and a seventh-century way of fighting. The Trojan shield wall in the film is a phalanx in all but name.

There are stirrups. Visibly, on at least one riding pad. The stirrup does not appear anywhere before roughly the fourth century AD, and in Europe not until around 500 AD — a miss of well over fifteen hundred years. There is also far more cavalry than there should be. Horses in the Late Bronze Age Aegean pulled chariots; they were not primarily ridden into battle, and the saddle was itself a recent innovation.

There are coins on the eyes of the dead. Coinage does not exist yet, anywhere. It is invented in Lydia in the seventh century BC. And even in later Greek practice the coin went in the mouth, not on the eyes — that is a Roman-era convention filtered through Victorian painting.

The bronze behaves like steel. This is the deepest error and the one nobody notices. In the film, swords punch cleanly through armour and out the other side, repeatedly, without consequence. Bronze does not do that. A bronze sword takes a serviceable edge but is prone to bending and to catastrophic snapping under lateral stress; points were often relatively blunt because a fine point in bronze folds. Real bronze-sword wounds tended heavily towards blunt trauma and broken bones, because a heavy bronze blade delivered edge-on functions substantially like a club. Not once in the film does a sword shatter or bend.

I can show you what actually happens to bronze under impact. The collection is full of it. Lot 2605 and Lot 2604 are arrowheads with tips bent over. Lot 2626 has a bent tang. Lot 2612 has a snapped spur. Lot 2620 has lost its tang entirely. Lot 1077 and Lot 2616 are bent and broken respectively; Lot 2613 has a broken tip. Lot 84058911, the Luristan leaf-shaped spearhead with the rat-tail tang, carries multiple ancient strike marks along one side of the blade — a record of parries taken and edges met. That is what bronze looks like after it has been used. It deforms. It records.

The armies are far too large. Late Bronze Age forces were smaller than epic and cinema suggest — an order of magnitude smaller, on most estimates. A thousand ships is a poetic number.

The Odyssey (2026)

Nolan’s film is the current argument, and I want to be fairer to it than the internet has been, because Nolan has actually thought about this.

The complaints are well known by now: Agamemnon’s matte-black armour, the heavy articulated boots that earned the film the nickname “Bronze Age space marines,” a general aesthetic that reads as more late-medieval than Late Helladic to many viewers. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick has said the more than 5,300 costumes were built on a foundation of Mycenaean and wider Late Bronze Age Mediterranean research, and Nolan has defended the choices in some detail.

Where I think Nolan is right. His argument for the blackened bronze is a real one — copper-alloy patination technologies did exist, and I have written elsewhere on this site about Corinthian bronze, hepatizon and the deliberate colouring of metal in antiquity. Alloys enriched with gold and silver and chemically treated to produce a dark lustrous surface are attested; the ancient sources are clear that the effect was prized. Whether the specific Mycenaean-dagger example he cites supports a full black panoply is another question — the niello and black-patinated inlay work on Mycenaean daggers is a decorative surface technique on small areas, not evidence for blackened plate armour. But he is drawing on something real, not inventing.

His deeper argument is stronger still, and it is the one his critics have mostly ignored. Nolan has pointed out that the earliest depictions of Homeric characters in Greek art show them dressed as people of Homer’s own era, not of the Bronze Age — and that there is therefore a defensible case for portraying the story the way its first audience received it. That is exactly right, and it is precisely the point I made at the start of this article: Homer’s poem is already a composite of two periods. A film that deliberately hybridises Bronze Age and eighth-century material is being faithful to the text’s own layering.

Where the argument becomes a licence. The trouble with “we are drawing on both periods” is that it can justify anything, including things that belong to neither. Heavy articulated foot armour is not Mycenaean and it is not Geometric. The hybrid principle is sound; it does not extend to a third invented register. And the film has, like every other, declined to put the one securely documented Odyssean helmet on Odysseus.

Where the film is genuinely, unusually good. The Odyssey is the first major production I know of to build the Late Bronze Age collapse into its plot. Characters speak of “the people from the sea” raiding settlements and palaces; Penelope fears for an Ithaca left undefended; the anxiety that the whole civilisation is coming apart runs underneath the story. And in the film’s final move, Odysseus tells Penelope that he and his men are the people from the sea — that the raiders are the returning Greeks themselves, sailing in search of food and supplies and leaving wreckage behind them.

That is a substantially better piece of historical thinking than most academic popularisation manages. The scholarship on the Sea Peoples increasingly emphasises that they were not a single foreign nation but a shifting set of coalitions that probably included displaced Mycenaeans — some of whom settled in Cyprus and the southern Levant. A film that makes its hero complicit in the collapse he is trying to sail home through has understood something true, and I would trade a good deal of costume accuracy for it.

The error that matters more than any prop

Here is what I would fix first, in any adaptation, before touching a single helmet.

Screen Bronze Age warfare is a series of duels between named men, in front of watching armies, decided by superior athleticism. Real Late Bronze Age warfare, as far as we can reconstruct it, was about logistics, attrition, siege and raiding. Feeding an army in the field. Water. Disease. Bronze supply — every broken blade a metallurgical problem, every campaign a drain on a tin stock that had come four thousand kilometres. Sieges lasted because walls worked and because nobody had a good answer to them. Most people who died in these wars died of dysentery, thirst, or being on the wrong side of a sack, not of a spear thrust from a famous man.

Homer knows this, incidentally. The Iliad is full of it — the cattle raids, the plague in Book 1, the ransom economy, the endless negotiation over corpses and armour. The films strip out the economics and keep the duels, and then get criticised for the helmets.


What the Metal Itself Tells You

I want to end where I began, with objects, because the objects are the part that is not a matter of opinion.

A Bronze Age weapon is a document. Casting seams tell you whether the smith worked in a bivalve mould or a single form, as on Lot 97137769, whose transverse seam at the socket neck is unmistakable. Rivet holes and their wear tell you how the head was fixed and whether the fixing failed — Lot 90939651 carries three, unevenly placed, one below the other on a single side, which is either a repair or a field improvisation. Rat-tail tangs and their flare, as on Lots 1516, 83118347 and 84058911, tell you about hafting solutions that predate the socket. Strike marks on a blade edge tell you the weapon met other metal. Bent tips and snapped spurs across a dozen arrowheads tell you what bronze does when it hits bone, armour or stone.

And the patina is a chronological and environmental record in its own right — the crystalline growth on Lot 98465245, the olive-green even film on Lot 97806108, the earthy encrustation on the Luristan material. For those interested in how the martial chronologies themselves have been forced backwards by excavation, the Arslantepe material is the sharpest example I know.

None of these objects can be tied to Troy. I want to say that as clearly as possible. What they can do is tell you what the metal of that century was capable of, how it was made, how it failed, and what it felt like in the hand — which is more than any film has yet managed to convey, and rather more than most of the popular literature.


What I Would Actually Put on Odysseus

If a director asked me — and none has — here is the kit, defensible from text and archaeology at once.

A leather cap stiffened with interwoven thongs and a felt inner layer, faced with rows of split boar’s tusks running in alternate directions. Visibly old. Repaired. Slightly ill-fitting, because it was made for another man’s head three generations ago.

A long thrusting spear, socketed, cast, with a pronounced midrib, as his primary weapon — used far more often than the sword.

A Naue II sword at the hip, flange-hilted, with organic grip plates held by rivets, perhaps of silver, because Homer says so and because Mycenaean swords really did have precious-metal rivets. Around 60–70 cm. Sharpened unevenly. Slightly bent, near the tip, from something that happened last month.

A round or waisted hide shield on a shoulder strap — not a hoplite shield, no arm-band, no bronze face unless he is being very grand.

Some bronze on the body: greaves, a corslet of scale or of plates, but not necessarily a full articulated panoply. The Dendra suit is an elite object from a period a century and a half before the war, and even the 2024 experiment only shows it could be worn, not that it was standard issue.

No bow. He left it at home.

No chariot. He is from Ithaca.

No stirrups, no coins, no crest, no red cloak, no phalanx.

It would look strange. It would look nothing like the two and a half thousand years of art that have taught us what a Greek hero is supposed to look like. That is the whole point. The Late Bronze Age is genuinely alien — a world of palace bureaucracies, chariot inventories written on clay, tin arriving from beyond the known world, warriors in articulated bronze shells, and helmets made from the teeth of dozens of pigs. It is far weirder and far more interesting than the Classical costume drama we keep substituting for it.

Homer, working four hundred years later with nothing but a tradition of remembered verse, got a surprising amount of it right. A film industry with the entire archaeological record available on request gets less. That is the honest comparison, and it is not flattering.

A Note on Method and Transparency

This article is written from the perspective of a collector and cataloguer who handles ancient bronze and copper alloy artifacts directly. Where I describe settled scholarly consensus — the dating of Troy VIIa, the archaeological reality of boar’s tusk helmets, the Naue II sequence, the mechanics of the tin trade — I have indicated it as such. Where a question is genuinely contested — the historicity of the Trojan War, the correct interpretation of Homeric chariot use, Drews’s military-revolution thesis, whether the Dendra panoply represents standard equipment — I have said so and given the competing positions rather than picking one and presenting it as fact.

My own argued positions in this piece are: that Homer’s material culture is best read as a stratified composite rather than as either accurate Bronze Age reportage or pure eighth-century invention; that the tin dependency is the underrated structural cause of the collapse; and that cinematic inaccuracy in this period is more damaging at the level of tactics, logistics and material behaviour than at the level of costume. These are interpretations, not established fact, and readers should weigh them accordingly.
